The Times has been writing about the comic book industry for almost 80 years, ever since November 1940, when an 80-foot-tall Superman balloon dazzled crowds at the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade (“Waves of murmured astonishment, screams and squeals of delight washed own the long lines… as Superman came over the horizon”). Now you can read the evolution of comic books as they exploded over time into the source material of blockbuster movies that routinely save Hollywood.

This 12” x 15” hardcover book contains Times features, profiles, reviews and magazine articles, plus 28 obituaries of the key stars and comic book creators. It is bursting with Times reprinted pages about superheroes on the big screen, on TV and even on Broadway.

All of the headliners with super powers are here – from Batman, Spider-Man, Iron Man, Wonder Woman, Captain America, Green Lantern and the X-Men. All of the behind-the-scenes masterminds and artists are chronicled, too with historical profiles on Jerry Siegel, Joseph Shuster, Bob Kane, Stan Lee, Jack Kirby and many others.

To start things off with a bang, it begins with an introduction by George Gene Gustines, a senior editor who has been writing about comic books for The Times since 2002.

It’s an epic gift for movie fans and comic book lovers, from Metropolis to Gotham City. Just like modern comics, our book comes with variant covers -- red or blue. A recipient’s name can be added to the first inside page to make the book truly special.

Pages before 1998 are black and white; later pages are often in color. Includes 75 color pages. Comes with a 2.5" x 7.5" magnifier and a certificate of authenticity. Produced in Vermont.
